If you’re looking for a hair straightener with curler combo device, check out our guide and product reviews to find the best option!
It’s no secret that you can curl your hair with a standard flat iron, but there are certain limitations. Since you’re essentially trying to lock your hair in a spiral shape while dragging it between two flat plates, it can be a little tricky.
In order to make styling more efficient, there are plenty of devices that try to make curling with your flat iron easier. There are multiple types of devices that blend flat irons and curling irons. Here are the options that I think can be effective for at home styling.
Best 2 in 1 hair straightener and curler 2019
Here are the best combination hair straightener and curling iron devices. Again, these products do not represent the full range of devices that are available on the market. The options below focus more on combination devices. If you want something that’s closer to a standard flat iron, check out our other article for recommendations on the best flat iron for curling.
For each device listed below, we’ve included our own review of the ease of use, functionality, and materials. For ease of use, we based the rating on how easy it is to both curl and straighten with the features that the device includes. For functionality, we took into account how well the device will work for different hair types. The materials rating considers the ability of the materials to protect hair health and heat effectively.
Remington 4 in 1 Ceramic Multi Styler Review
This name of this device comes from the fact that you can create four different types of styles while using it. In terms of the type of the device, this one is close to a typical flat iron in that the outside of the device isn’t actually heated. The main heating elements are still the plates, so you’ll be using the same technique that you would with a regular flat iron.
What sets this device apart is the adjustable edge. The darker portion has a switch that allows you to extend it further out, depending on the type of curl you want to achieve. You can do standard spiral curls, larger bouncy curls, or long waves. This is pretty innovative, since you can’t even get that sort of control with an actual curling iron.
Yet, while I do think it’s an excellent idea, it seems limiting. It’s best used with smaller sections of hair, since all the hair needs to fit on the adjustable section in order for it to be effective. For fine, medium, or thin hair, this probably isn’t an issue. But for thicker or coarser hair, it may result in more time spent styling.
Another limiting factor is that the max temperature is 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Again, this is better for fine or medium hair types. Coarse hair types may need a higher temperature, especially when curling. If you have coarse hair and decide to purchase the device, only doing small sections of hair at a time can help make it more effective. Overall, it’s a fun, novel idea that will work best with the right hair type, as well as good technique. If you’re not already adept at curling with a flat iron though, I would pass on this device.
Conair 2 in 1 Straightener
Unlike the first device, this one has heated elements all the way around, in order to make styling more effective. For the curling portion, the stainless steel coated exterior heats up to 265 degrees Fahrenheit. For the flat iron portion, the ceramic coated plates heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The exterior isn’t really hot enough for effective styling, so what you’re supposed to do is use the same technique you would if you were curling with a flat iron. (wrap the hair around the exterior of the device, and pull it downward.) However, the heated metal portion does provide a little extra hold for your curls. This should help with the issue of accidentally straightening instead of curling.
Another interesting point of this device is the temperature selection itself. Rather than having a digital display or a wheel, it has 5 different buttons for temperature selection. Just push the button for the temperature you want, and you’re done! Its a small touch, but it does make temperature selection simpler. Although, with only 5 choices, some may find the options limiting.
One potential downside is that, like the previous device, this one has a max temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. For coarser hair types, make sure to style only small sections of hair.
As for materials, I like the ceramic coating on the interior, as well as the ceramic heating elements. Both of these are great for hair health and effective styling, since they maintain an even heat. The stainless steel exterior is the only part I have uncertainty about. This isn’t a typical metal used for heated hair tools, and while it should theoretically work, a titanium or even copper coating would have been preferable.
3 in 1 Straightener Curler and Crimper
If you’re the sort of person who wants the most possible for you money, it’s hard to beat this deal. Not only can it curl and straighten, but it can also crimp your hair.
Anyone old enough to remember will probably think of crimping as a strictly 90’s style, but it’s actually coming back around. You can also use crimping to create more volume near the scalp. (In order to create volume, simply divide the hair near your part into two sections: on above and one below. Lightly crimp the bottom section of hair that sit closest to the scalp, and then cover them with a layer of hair on top. It should give you lift without showing too much of the crimped hair below.)
Of course, the device can be used to curl and straighten as well. In order to facilitate this, the device can lock the crimping section in place, so that you can use it as a regular 2 in 1 device.
As opposed to the last two devices, this one is designed to be used as a standard curling iron with clip. If you typically use a curling wand, keep in mind that the curling technique and style will both be different.
Another important not is that this has the lowest max temperature of all the device, at 200 degrees Celsius. As such, it’s best used for fine to medium hair. For coarser or thicker hair, I would go with a different selection.
Overall, this device seems to be more complicated than the other options, however, if you can master it, it gives you quite a few options.
Huachi Hair Straightener and Curler Combo
I’ve recommended this device previously, but I wanted to include it here again because it’s a good option. I like it because you can use it as a standard flat iron, or lock it in order to use it as a curling iron; in that regard, it’s a true 2 in 1.
It also has the highest max temperature of any device on this list, at around 430 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it easier to use for coarser hair types. However, the temperature selection is limited to just a few options.
Another unique feature is the materials. This device uses a combination of tourmaline and ceramic, which is great for hair health. The addition of tourmaline helps to generate negative ions, which can seal in hair’s natural oil and give you a frizz free shine.
Hair Curler and Straightener
This one is similar to the previous option in terms of the type of device, and it also happens to have the same max temperature. although it does have some distinguishing features.
I also like the ceramic coating on the plates. Ceramic is a good material for hair health, although it’s less effective when used only as a coating.
This one also comes with a safety glove. I like this addition since the device has heated exterior elements. This means you have to be extra careful while using it. Gloves can’t completely protect you, but they do give you room to make the occasional mistake.
Our Top Picks
Based on our own ratings and device features, the two best devices are the Huachi hair straightener and curler combo and the Conair 2 in 1.
Making the Right Choice for You
Of course, everyone has different styling needs. When choosing your device, consider your priorities and abilities first. If you’re a beginner, choosing something with a lower max temperature and less complicated features will make it easier to style. A 2 in 1 device or something like the one that Conair offers would be a good choice, since they’re designed to help you curl your hair. Even if you haven’t quite mastered the technique, these devices should be forgiving. If you’re more adept at styling and want to focus on achieving a variety of looks, go for a more complex 3 in 1, or even 4 in 1, device.
But regardless of level, the point is to choose something that you can have fun with. Like makeup and fashion, hair styling is a way to express yourself. With this type of device, the point is to experiment and try new things, so don’t be afraid to get the hair straightener with curler that appeals most to you, no matter what your level.
