You’ve just made it to your destination in a rush, late as ever. You brush your hair away from your face, and that’s when it hits you: you have no idea if you’ve turned the flat iron off. You can’t help but wonder,  do flat irons turn off automatically?

Short answer: not all of them.

If you’re looking for a flat iron with auto shut off, you may have to look a little harder than you expect. While it’s a prevalent feature, it’s often buried under flashier things like plate coatings, temperature settings, and width. However, it’s still an excellent feature, and one that I like to point out often when reviewing products.

What is auto shut off?

This feature basically means that your device will turn off automatically. How that happens really depends on the device. Some just have a set time limit (usually around one hour). Others will only turn off if you haven’t moved the device for a specific amount of time (usually between 30 minutes to an hour).

Why is it beneficial?

This sounds like a pretty simple addition, but I’ve always felt it makes a big difference. One common issue with straighteners or other heated styling tools, is that you always have those days when you’re not sure if you’ve turned them off. It’s the same anxiety you can get with your stove, oven, or coffee pot. I’m someone who always unplugs my device after using it, and yet I’ve still had days where I was rushed and frantic before leaving the house, and therefore uncertain if I really did power down my straightener.

With that, the obvious selling point of this feature is the peace of mind. Even if you do happen to forget, you can rest assured that, at the very least, the device will shut down soon. It minimizes the amount of damage that’s possible just because you left on your straightener.

If that sounds appealing to you, you’re in luck. There are plenty of these devices available.

Top Picks

Since this feature is becoming more common, I tried to pick a diverse set of power down times, as well as different styles of device. This presents a better overview of the full range of possibilities. Check out the options below to get you started with your shopping.

Velvet Travelling Bag

Review:

I wanted to include this one to provide a high heat, titanium plate option. Both of these features are helpful for people who have coarse or naturally curly hair, since you’ll typically need more heat to get that hair type to cooperate.

Remington Anti Static Straightener

Remington S5520 1 ¾" Anti-Static Flat Iron with Floating Ceramic Plates and Digital Controls, Hair Straightener, Purple

Features:

  • 60 Minute Automatic power down
  • Ceramic plates with titanium coating
  • Max temperature 410 Degrees Fahrenheit
  • LCD Temperature Display
  • 6 temperature settings
  • Swivel cord

Review:

This is another titanium option, but there are a few things that set it apart namely the fact that the plates are actually made from ceramic, and only have a titanium coating. If you need a titanium flat iron for fine hair, I would recommend this one. The ceramic plates should keep the heat more evenly than you would typically get with titanium. The maximum temperature on this device is also lower, so you don’t have to worry about super damaging hot spots as much.

Bestope Straightener

  • 60 minute automatic power down
  • Tourmaline ceramic, floating plates
  • LCD Temperature Display
  • Max temperature 450 Degrees Fahrenheit
  • Swivel cord

Review:

This device has ceramic and tourmaline on the plates, which makes this a good option if your top priority is hair health. Ceramic is main beneficial for it’s even heating, which can help protect your hair. Tourmaline is good because it releases a high amount of negative ions, which can help your hair maintain moisture.

VAV Ionic Straightener

VAV Professional Flat Iron 1in 3D Floating Plate Ceramic Hair Straightener284℉-446℉ Auto Shut-Off US Plug (Red)

Features:

    • 30 minute automatic power down
    • Tourmaline ceramic, floating plates
    • LCD Temperature Display
    • Max temperature 450 Degrees Fahrenheit
  • Swivel cord

Review:

This is another tourmaline ceramic option, but this one has the shortest power down time of the devices on the list. Personally, I prefer these shorter time lengths. By the time you realize you might have left your straightener on, the thirty minutes has usually passed, or is close to passing. The fact that you get all the added benefits of tourmaline ceramic and a high maximum temperature is really just a bonus.

Overall Thoughts

Everyone loves automatic functions because they make life easier. It’s one less thing that you have to worry about while going through your day. That’s why we have phone apps that can lock our doors, turn off our stoves, and get the lights for us, no matter where we are. It’s nice to see that heated styling tools are catching up to this trend. With a flat iron with auto shut off, you don’t have to worry that you’ve left your straightener on all day.
